We do not set out to build unicorns. We read sectors before the rest of the market does and the unicorns follow. Since our very first fund, fifteen years ago, that has been the method: early to deep tech when our own industry still insisted there was no money in hardware, early to mobility before it was a venture category. This year it produced our first deep-tech unicorns, on top of FlixBus and Finn.
This is not luck. Seeing the future a little earlier than everyone else is the whole job. We invest at seed or earlier, so by the time a trend has a name, we have been on the cap table for years.
